The Central Valley climate ranges from Mediterranean to arid and desert like. As such, we experience hot summers and cool, manageable winters. Regardless of where you are in the valley, preparing your home for the winter months is wise. Doing so keeps it in tip top shape and reduces costly repair bills that can pop up and the most inopportune time. Keep this list handy as you prepare for winter.
Safety first! Literal hot spots like your fireplace and chimney should be checked for damage, bird or rodent nests, stuck flues, and if it’s a gas burner, consider having the gas company do a check on the line. Also, ensure all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working and have fresh batteries installed.
Check your HVAC. Nothing is more maddening (and chilling!) than a heater that doesn’t fire up when you need it! Have your HVAC serviced at least once a year and remember to change out filters. If you haven’t already, purchase a programmable or smart thermostat to save energy.
Consider your landscaping. This is the time of the year to rake up any leaves, trim trees and shrubs and plant bulbs you’d like to appear in the spring. Give your plants a healthy serving of mulch and trim any branches that are touching the house or windows.
Clean the gutters. Clogged gutters will collect rain, which can cause wood rot and other expensive damage. While you’re checking those, look at your downspouts too. They should transport water at least three to four feet away from your foundation, and the area they flow should be downgraded away from your home.
Remember the roof. Before the rainy season arrives, confirm roof tiles and shingles aren’t missing, broken or cracked. If you do find damage, have them repaired as soon as you can.
