Four Reasons Why We Love Open Floor Plans

April 25, 2023

Open floor plans – also called ‘great rooms’ – are areas of a home where two or more spaces, such as the kitchen, dining room and living room, are combined into one bright, airy, open space. They are popular design features for today’s homebuyers, and our home designers love including them in our floorplans because they create a welcoming, flexible and functional living area that complements many lifestyles. Following are some of the reasons we love open floor plans!

Great for entertaining. Open floor plans make it easier for people to socialize and interact with each other. With fewer walls and barriers, guests can move around and communicate more freely since everyone is in the same space. And if the open space includes the kitchen, the host, who may spend a good deal of time preparing food, won’t be separated from the party.

Greater energy efficiency. Open floor plans can improve energy efficiency by allowing natural light to flow through the space reducing the need for artificial lighting, which can help decrease electric bills. Additionally, open floor plans often feature large windows and/or sliding glass doors that allow natural light and air to flow throughout the room.

Flexible design options. With an open floor plan, homeowners have more options when it comes to designing their living space, allowing for customization because the space is so highly flexible and adaptable. You can rearrange furniture, change the function of a space or add or remove elements. This flexibility allows homeowners to make the most of their living space to create an area that fits their lifestyle. And since everything is open, traffic flow is more intuitive and efficient.

Good for families. In a more traditional space, rooms are closed off and not visible to each other, which means people are also cut off from others. In an open space parents and kids are in the same area, which can be great for homework, spending time together and keeping an eye on little ones.
