New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home

December 23, 2019

It’s nearly January – the time to make yourself promises to eat better, do better and live better. But why stop there? If you’re in a new home or you’re simply trying to get a better handle on the one you already have, extend your resolution list to your personal property as well. There’s no reason why you can’t make your house healthier too!

Cut back on energy. If you’re in a new San Joaquin Valley Homes house, then bravo! You’re already doing this since each new home is loaded with energy-saving features like low-e windows and Energy Star appliances. If you’re in an older home, however, start researching ways you can incorporate savings into your day-to-day life. Look on your utility companies’ websites because they will offer you lots of advice where you can save money and resources.

Cut the clutter. The holidays are over, and chances are you’ve accumulated even more stuff! As you put these new items away, this is the perfect time to cull what you already have. Try to give away, discard or donate at least three to five bags or boxes from your house each month. By the end of the year, your home will feel lighter and less cluttered.

Do a financial checkup. If you’re saving for a new home or have recently purchased one, set aside some time throughout the year to get a handle on all your finances because you may be spending more in areas you don’t mean to. Shop around car and home insurance occasionally to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Talk to an investment or tax person to ensure you’re saving enough for a large purchase, retirement or taxes. Look at your credit card statements to see how many automatic payments you’ve scheduled. Maybe you’re subscribing to services you’re not really using any more like streaming channels or memberships.

Keep the bedroom tidy. “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day.” And in the evenings, put your clothes away or in the hamper when you get ready for bed. Your room be tidy and feel more welcoming when it’s time to go to bed.

Embrace technology. 2020 could be THE year you automate your house! You don’t have to go straight to wiring up all your window coverings and electronics, but you can start small with an item like a smart thermostat or video doorbell. Each month or so add another device, so by the time the holidays come, you’ll be able to run your entire home from your tablet!

Have you resolved to purchase your first home this year? If so San Joaquin Valley Homes has a variety of homes that are priced perfectly for those wanting to make the giant and exciting leap to home ownership. Come visit our model neighborhoods to see which one is perfect for you.
