Snowy Locales in California to Visit

January 17, 2023

People who dream about coming to California typically conjure wide blue oceans, endless sunny days and sandy toes. Not many will consider California a snowy adventure. But those of us who live here know differently! California has impressively majestic mountains boasting snow for months. If you and your family are looking for a white vacation this winter for skiing, sledding or just having a chance to wear your snuggest cozy sweater, consider these very hot cold spots!

Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park

Not only does this famous park have massive, thousand-year-old trees, it also gets snow! Grab some snowshoes and hike to the largest tree in the world, General Sherman or the second largest tree in the world, General Grant. Stop in Wolverton Meadow for snowshoeing and snowball throwing. For a more thrilling adventure, stop by China Peak for skiing and snowboarding!

Mammoth Lakes

Each year Mammoth Mountain averages 30 feet of snow. Skiers and snowboarders loyally journey to the mountain annually to get their winter on. And if you’re not prone to winter sports, you can still bundle up and travel to the summit at 11,000 feet elevation on a gondola that ends with an awe-inspiring scenic overlook.

June Lake

Forget it’s summery name! June Lake in winter is the place to be for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and playing. It’s a gentle, wide ski hill is perfect for skiers who don’t like the big crowds and have a more laid-back or beginner approach to skiing and snowboarding.

Yosemite National Park

If you think it’s pretty during the summer, wait until you see it in the winter. With a marked decrease in crowds, you can revel in its splendor while ice skating at Half Dome and skiing at Badger Pass. Additionally, it has 22 miles of trails that are just right for cross-country skiing.

Big Bear

Wanting to make a weekend out of snow-filled fun? Big Bear Resort is the perfect place for a snowy getaway! There is something for everyone here. Skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and snowshoeing make up some of the icy activities the resort offers. Make a weekend out of it and enjoy a warm fire in your cabin after a day out in the cold!
